Getting started…..

NVQ Diploma in Barbering Level 2

Based on the national occupational standards for barbering, this qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior barber.

 

Mandatory and optional units are combined to achieve the required number of credits. Topics covered are as follows:

  • Cut men’s hair using basic techniques
  • Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques
  • Dry and finish men’s hair
  • Create basic outlines and detailing in hair
  • Advise and consult with clients
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work.

 

Plus a choice from the following to achieve the required number of credits:

  • Relax hair
  • Assist with shaving services
  • Colour and lighten men’s hair
  • Perm and neutralise hair
  • Plait and twist hair
  • Temporarily attach hair to enhance a style
  • Fulfil salon reception duties

 

Throughout this qualification, students will develop their knowledge and understanding of the relevant anatomy, physiology and health and safety. Students will also develop their communication, customer service and commercial skills all of which are highly valued by employers.

More advanced…..

NVQ Diploma in Barbering Level 3 

A more advanced course based on the national occupational standards for barbering, this level 3 qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as a barber.

 

Mandatory and optional units are combined to achieve the required number of credits. Topics covered are as follows:

  • Creatively cut hair using a combination of barbering techniques
  • Design and create a range facial hair shapes
  • Provide shaving services
  • Provide client consultation services

 

Plus a choice from the following to achieve the required number of credits:

  • Provide a variety of relaxing services
  • Design and create patterns in hair
  • Hair colour correction services
  • Colour and lighten men’s hair
  • Develop and enhance your creative hairdressing skills
  • Provide specialist hair and scalp treatments
  • Perm and neutralise hair.
  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities or the financial effectiveness of the business.
  • Fulfil salon reception duties

 

Throughout this qualification, students will continue to develop their knowledge and understanding of the relevant anatomy, physiology and health and safety. Students will also develop their communication, customer service and commercial skills all of which are highly valued by employers. Problem solving and research skills will also be improved.

 

What could a barbering qualification lead to?

Students who achieve a barbering qualification are eligible to become a State Registered Graduate Barber with the Hair Council and join the British Barber’s Association. As a junior barber, students could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts which include:

  • Commercial barber salon
  • Specialist African type barber
  • Self-employment
  • Television, film, theatre and media
  • Armed Services
  • HM Prison Services
  • Cruise Liners
  • Hospitals/ Care Homes
